Troubleshooting steps for a variety of issues that could affect the driver view on the tablet

No Bird (change notification) Sounds

  1. Make sure physical volume on tablet is up
  2. Go into Settings>Sounds>Volumes and ensure that Media Volume is up all the way as well as the System volume.  The Notification volume isn't used by the MLS app
  3. From the manifest, click on Configurator
  4. Toggle "Play sound for auto-refresh alert?"  to No then back to Yes
  5. Tap the SET button
  6. If none of the above works, uninstall the app and install a new one from the play store.
  7. When installing the new app, it's important to tap allow to the prompt for Location.  If you don't see the prompt you'll need to go into the system settings of the tablet to the Application Manager then find the app and go into Permissions and set to allow.

 AVL Update Slow or Non-Existent

The AVL map should update about every 30 seconds (but the settings can be changed on the tablet to update more frequently).  Things that will prevent or delay an AVL position update:

  • Make sure Location is Enabled on the tablet
  • Make sure MLS App Permissions have Location enabled
  • Vehicle not moving
  • Driver not logged in to app
  • Vehicle moved, but less than the programmed radius (probably 30 meters/98 feet)
  • Vehicle moving and driver logged in, but no internet connection on tablet (dead zone or other connectivity issue)
  • Tablet not getting a good satellite signal (could be complicated by tablet in map pocket, on the floor, or someplace in the vehicle where it doesn't have a clear view of the sky).  Using mounts in vehicles helps greatly to ensure tablets have a good satellite signal.
  • GPS not enabled on tablet
  • GPS location method not optimally set (should be on Device/Tablet Only or GPS only).  If you use "High Accuracy" the tablet attempts to get location information from the known position of WiFi networks.  This means that even if you turn WiFi off, your tablet may turn it back on automatically so it can search for WiFi networks to find the location.
  • WiFi enabled (tablet may attempt to connect to hot spots and as a result might give up a good cellular signal in favor of a WiFi hot spot for a bad/no connection).
If none of the above steps work, uninstall the app and re-install from the Play store.  Be sure to Allow any app permissions that come up when you run it.

Drivers Manifest Only on Half of the Screen (Split Screen View)

When you use the task switcher button on the tablet (that looks like the two rectangles) the running apps on the tablet show in multiple windows.  If you tap on the multi-window button to the left of the X in the corner, the app will inter into split screen mode and will use only half of the screen.  This can also happen if you linger a little too long on the task switcher button itself.

If you get into this mode, there are one or two ways to get out of it (depending on whether the Split screen view action feature is enabled or not).  If it is, you can press and hold the task switcher button at the bottom of the screen and it will return to normal full screen.  Holding the task switcher button will not do anything if the Split screen view is not enabled, and you will instead need to touch and hold on the window split and drag up or down (depending on whether the manifest is on the bottom or top) until it returns to full screen.

Even if the split screen view action isn't enabled, you can still get into the split screen view if you touch the split screen button on the top right of the app's window next to the X while in Task Switcher View.

Enable/Disable Split screen view action

Go into Settings>Advanced Features>Multi Window and toggle "Split screen view action" on or off

This explanation sounds much more complicated than it is.  I encourage you and everyone to practice it a few times to get used to it and you'll see how easy it is.  If you have any trouble or need additional help, don't hesitate to contact us.

No Route Found on Google Map

Sometimes if you tap on the map button next to a stop, Google Maps opens up but says No Route Found.  This is usually because the Transit Mode button was toggled in the Google Map and there are no published public transit routes to use for your location to the trip stop.  Tap the Car mode button to return back to normal car navigation mode.

Quick Checkup and App Update

Once a week or so, it's probably a good idea to make sure all of the apps and the Android OS on your tablets are up to date.  By default, most tablets are set to only check and perform updates when on WiFi and not over cellular.  If the WiFi is disabled on your tablets (which is generally a pretty good practice to prevent issues caused by poor WiFi connections and transitions to/from cellular network), then the tablet may not be notifying you or updating everything like it should.  Follow the steps below to do a checkup and app update.

  • From base, turn on the WiFi on the tablet and connect (if not already on).
  • Open the Play Store app, check for updates and perform the updates.
  • Once the Easy Rides Driver Manifest app updates or installs, open the app
  • From the app login screen, swipe down from the MIDDLE of the screen NOT from the top.  This should reveal the app menu button.

  • Tap Clear Cache.  This should reload the login screen.
  • Go to the tablet settings (not the app settings).
  • Tap on Apps then "Application Manager" and locate the MLS app.

  • Tap on the MLS App then Permissions.
  • Enable Location if not already enabled.

  • Go back to the main settings menu and find "Location" and tap on it.

  • Make sure Location is Enabled. If you want the WiFi radio on the tablet to stay OFF until you turn it on, tap on Locating Method and tap "Tablet Only".  Otherwise, "High Accuracy" is fine (and is Google's preferred mode) but it uses more battery and depending on settings, could disconnect the tablet from cellular networks in favor of whatever WiFi it finds to connect to.  Generally, "Tablet Only" is the preferred option for this kind of work.

  • Open Google Maps and tap the Location Icon to see if it centers the map on your current location.  You may see a message from Google to "Allow Location" even if your location setting is already on and on "Tablet Only".  You can tap on the popup and tap Cancel if you want to stay on "Tablet Only" location and verify that it still has you accurately in the correct location.  If you tap "OK" then Google will turn on "High Accuracy Mode" on the tablet and may then later enable the WiFi radio even if you've got it turned off.
  • Go back to the main settings menu and find "Sounds and vibration" and tap on it.
  • Tap on "Volume" and make sure that "Media" volume is up all the way.  Media volume is what is used for the notification sound (bird sounds) that is used by the manifest app - NOT "Notifications" as you might think.
  • Go to the manifest app and run it. It should now be ready to login and function normally.
